Easter in Early Years: Celebrating Spring at Orchard House Nursery

In the UK, Christmas often takes centre stage as the most widely celebrated holiday of the year, with Easter sometimes feeling like its quieter, less celebrated cousin. While I am a huge fan of the magic and warmth that Christmas brings, I have always held a special place in my heart for Easter.

At Orchard House Nursery in Blackheath, Easter is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the changing seasons with our children and families.

Beyond its spiritual significance, Easter marks a truly beautiful time of year. The days are longer and warmer, gardens blossom with colour, and chicks begin to hatch. With colourful Easter eggs and delicious chocolate treats, Easter signals the start of spring, lambing season, and a sense of hope and renewal. For young children especially, this seasonal shift is full of wonder.

The Easter break provides families with a fantastic opportunity to explore nature, creativity, and community. In early years settings, these seasonal moments are incredibly valuable. Children begin to notice changes in their environment—buds on trees, brighter mornings, and the return of outdoor play in milder weather. These small observations are powerful learning experiences that nurture curiosity and support an early understanding of the world.

One of our favourite Easter activities at our nursery is the Orchard House Easter Hat Parade. This much-loved tradition brings together children, families, and staff in a joyful celebration of creativity. This year, the occasion was especially memorable. Our children and families worked together to design and decorate their own hats, and over 30 children proudly paraded their colourful creations along our improvised garden runway.

Chicks, flowers, rabbits, and plenty of colour filled the day, cheered on by staff, parents, grandparents, aunts, and cousins who gathered for the celebration. Events like this are a special part of nursery life, creating a strong sense of community and belonging.

Activities like this are about so much more than arts and crafts. They help to build confidence, encourage self-expression, and create lasting memories. They also strengthen the connection between home and nursery, as families work together during the hat-making process.

Easter reminds us to slow down and appreciate life’s simple joys—spending time together, being creative, and noticing the beauty in the changing seasons. In early years education, these moments are incredibly valuable. They support children’s emotional wellbeing, inspire imagination, and nurture a lifelong love of learning.

The Orchard House Easter Hat Parade culminated in the sharing of chocolate eggs—a perfect reminder of the joy that grows when families and nursery come together.
